A Story Of Perseverance Being Rewarded

8/18/2023

WEST LOOP:

Brian Kent’s journey serves as a profound source of motivation for athletes, encompassing the highs and lows that can resonate with anyone. Despite facing setbacks like mononucleosis derailing his college football career and rotator cuff surgery shattering his college baseball dreams, Kent’s narrative holds universal inspiration.

Kent chronicals his journey and ”Walked On.” From his high school days to college experiences, from pursuing football and baseball to navigating independent leagues, and from personal training endeavors to securing a contract with the White Sox, Kent’s trajectory is a testament to resilience. Though the ultimate aspiration of reaching the major leagues remained unfulfilled, the path he treaded is rich with invaluable lessons that are certain to ignite the spirits of all who read his story.

During his time as a high school ballplayer, Kent harbored ambitious hopes of excelling in both Big Ten football and Major League Baseball. Nurtured by exceptional coaching during his youth and high school years, he earned recruitment offers for Division I football and baseball. Remarkably, even without scholarship opportunities in either sport, Kent embraced the chance to be a preferred walk-on in football while nurturing the possibility of securing a baseball scholarship at the same prestigious Big Ten university. This was the embodiment of a dream materializing.

However, fate took an unexpected turn due to the “kissing disease” and a significant coaching upheaval, altering the course of his plans. Engaging in introspection and reevaluating his objectives, Kent opted to shift his focus from football to baseball, a decision that prompted him to transfer and commence anew. Another walk-on chance beckoned at a Big XII university, an environment seeking true athletes rather than mere baseball players. Initially promising, this opportunity eventually unveiled a harsh reality after confidential assessments with coaches.

To persist in his pursuit of a baseball career, Kent embarked on a second transfer, this time to a Division II institution. His journey at the third school was marked by a season rendered ineligible due to NCAA transfer rules, the experience of receiving and then losing a scholarship, wrestling with subpar performance influenced by injury, and grappling with the threat of a career-ending shoulder surgery.

His story is a reminder of perseverance being rewarded.
