The City of Goodness Serves As A Refuge In War-Torn Ukraine

4/9/2024

NILES:

The Ukrainian Women’s Association of America (UWAA), based in Chicago, is a dedicated professional women’s group committed to supporting vulnerable communities. One of our primary initiatives focuses on providing aid to a safe haven situated in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, near the Romanian border, known as the City of Goodness.

In the wake of the escalating conflict in Ukraine since February 2022, children and families have endured unimaginable hardships, including forced displacement, profound loss, and relentless violence. Tragically, at least 545 children have lost their lives, equivalent to a child perishing every day since the conflict intensified, primarily due to bombardment. Over 1,156 children have suffered injuries, and countless others grapple with the trauma inflicted by the conflict.

The City of Goodness serves as a refuge for some of the luckier families and children escaping the horrors of war. With approximately 300 children currently residing there, the provision of consistent professional care from dedicated caretakers, medical personnel, and mental health professionals is paramount to their well-being. UWAA’s contributions have been instrumental in expanding the City of Goodness, including the construction of a third building to accommodate upwards of 500 individuals seeking shelter. Furthermore, UWAA has alleviated the burden of utility costs during the harsh winter of 2023 and played a pivotal role in establishing a hospice and rehabilitation center within the sanctuary.

The newly inaugurated medical facility within the City of Goodness provides essential care to terminally ill children, offering them comfort and support from trained medical professionals and compassionate caretakers. These children engage in enriching activities, fostering a sense of inclusion and joy irrespective of their circumstances.

Our organization remains steadfast in our commitment to aiding children and families affected by the devastating repercussions of war and violence in Ukraine. Through our ongoing support, including funding for the shelter and access to on-the-ground psychiatrists, we strive to make a tangible difference in their lives. This weekend, a group of approximately 30 Ukrainian American women from UWAA will host a benefit concert dedicated to raising funds for the children impacted by the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
