"Okay, Campers, Rise and Shine, and Don't Forget Your Booties 'Cause It's Cooooold Out There Today"

A sigh of relief swept across the Midwest today as Woodstock Willie did not see his shadow, signaling an early spring. The winter gods will soon retreat, making way for the eternal spring goddess to settle in—Chicago has a cozy spot ready.

But how did this tradition begin in Illinois?

In 1992, something remarkable happened in the historic city of Woodstock, Illinois. Crews arrived, roped off the picturesque city square, moved in filming equipment, and played the Pennsylvania Polka—on repeat.

They were filming Groundhog Day, a movie that has remained a favorite for nearly 30 years. Each year, Woodstock gathers to celebrate the film’s legacy and the vibrant community that made it possible. Visitors from as far as Australia, celebrities from the movie, and local media come together for the annual festival—one that offers a much-needed break from winter’s gloom, if only for a few days.
