West Ridge, located on the far North Side of the City of Chicago, is an exceptional community area that offers a diverse and vibrant environment.

Recognized as one of Chicago’s 77 community areas, West Ridge, also known as North Town and West Rogers Park, is a middle-class neighborhood. It is situated in the 50th ward and the 40th ward, boasting a rich history and a strong sense of identity.

The community’s geographical boundaries are defined by Howard Street to the north, Ridge Boulevard, Western Avenue, and Ravenswood Avenue to the east, Bryn Mawr Avenue and Peterson Avenue to the south, and Kedzie Avenue and the North Shore channel of the Chicago River to the west.

West Ridge shares a historical connection with Rogers Park but became an independent village in 1890, primarily due to a disagreement over park districts, commonly known as the Cabbage War. However, it was eventually annexed to Chicago on April 4, 1893, along with Rogers Park.

Present-day West Ridge stands as one of Chicago’s more affluent communities, with a multitude of cultural and architectural treasures. Devon Avenue showcases a vibrant multi-ethnic culture, while Ridge and Lunt Avenues boast stunning historic mansions. The area is also home to notable institutions like St. Scholastica Academy. Additionally, West Ridge has one of the highest per capita incomes on the North Side of Chicago.

The community is a melting pot of diverse immigrant communities, making it a true representation of multiculturalism. It is renowned for housing the Midwest’s largest Hasidic community, alongside other vibrant populations such as Jewish, Irish American, German-American, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Assyrian, Russian, Korean, and Rohingya communities.

Overall, West Ridge serves as a thriving neighborhood that celebrates its rich cultural heritage and fosters a strong sense of community among its residents.
