Voodoo Doughnut Opens In Fulton Market
Can we just say it’s about time? The Portland doughnut shop has finally come to the windy city. What sets them apart from others?
Longtime friends and Portland’s entertainment enthusiasts, Kenneth “Cat Daddy” Pogson and Tres Shannon, joined forces to bring Voodoo Doughnut to life. Their shared passion for blending outstanding hospitality with a daring, do-it-yourself show business approach fueled their collaborative venture in 2000.
Identifying a gap in downtown Portland’s culinary scene, they embarked on a journey to establish a doughnut haven. In 2003, they secured a petite storefront nestled between two nightclubs in Old Town. The duo playfully entertained the notion of achieving “world doughnut domination” among friends and family, setting the stage for the birth of Voodoo Doughnut. Initially, their pastry offerings showcased a delightful fusion of both traditional and unconventional flavors.
Voodoo Doughnut quickly became more than just a bakery, evolving into a hub of eccentricity. Beyond the delectable doughnuts, the establishment hosted a myriad of sideshow activities, including officiating legal weddings, hosting loft concerts above Voodoo’s iconic duct tape-adorned bathroom, and even offering weekly Swahili lessons. This dynamic blend of treats and entertainment solidified Voodoo Doughnut as a unique and unforgettable experience in the heart of Portland.
