Chicago Bears owner Virginia McCaskey dies at 102
Virginia Halas McCaskey, the matriarch of the Chicago Bears and daughter of team founder George Halas, passed away Thursday at the age of 102, the team announced.
Born on January 5, 1923, in Chicago, McCaskey’s life was intertwined with the Bears from the very beginning. She studied business management at Drexel University and, in 1943, married Ed McCaskey, with whom she raised 11 children.
After her father’s passing in 1983, McCaskey assumed ownership of the Bears, becoming a pioneering woman in professional sports leadership. Under her stewardship, the team secured its iconic victory in Super Bowl XX in 1986.
Though she largely avoided the spotlight, McCaskey was revered for her unwavering devotion to the franchise and its legacy. Her impact spanned generations, leaving an indelible mark on the Bears and the NFL as a whole.
“We are heartbroken but find solace in knowing Virginia Halas McCaskey lived a long, faith-filled life and is now reunited with the love of her life,” the family said in a statement.
McCaskey’s passing closes a significant chapter in Bears history, as she was a direct link to the team’s founding and its rich, storied tradition. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
