The iconic ruby-red slippers worn by legendary actress Judy Garland in MGM’s classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz have been surrounded by mystery and misfortune, according to a new book. In Under The Rainbow, author Jeff Keene explores the enigmatic events tied to the disappearance of these famous and valuable pieces of Hollywood memorabilia.

The original sequin-covered ruby slippers, one of four pairs crafted in the 1930s by costume designer Gilbert Adrian for about four dollars, are now valued at approximately $6 million. Nearly 85 years after the film’s release, the story of Dorothy and her dog Toto’s perilous journey into the mythical land of Oz is experiencing a revival, highlighted by Universal Pictures’ upcoming film adaptation of the popular Broadway musical Wicked.

The magical Ruby Slippers, worn by Judy Garland in MGM’s beloved 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz,” are arguably the most iconic piece of movie memorabilia in the world. These slippers, displayed at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, attract more visitors than any other exhibit, surpassed only by the Star-Spangled Banner.

Valued at over $6,000,000, they are the most expensive prop in Hollywood history, highly coveted by collectors and thieves alike. On August 28, 2005, the “Traveling Pair,” which were on display at the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, were stolen and remained missing until July 2018.

This is the true story of their recovery.

Under the Rainbow was awarded first prize in the 2024 BookFest Book Awards.
