Starling: A Beacon of Innovation and Community in North Lawndale

By Tom Barnas

For the first time in more than 70 years, Chicago’s 16th Street in North Lawndale is home to a new commercial-only development. Starling, a resident-centered space designed for collaboration and creativity, aims to revitalize the historically underserved area.

Developed by Duo/., a Chicago-based innovation studio, the project offers a variety of flexible spaces for meetings, events, and creative work. The goal is to provide a welcoming environment where residents can gather, learn and grow.

“Starling is more than just a building—it’s a space that fosters knowledge, community engagement and economic opportunity,” said Carlos Robles, co-founder of Duo/. “This is about investing in a neighborhood that has long been overlooked.”

A vision realized

Starling was founded by siblings Carlos, Rafael and Karla Robles, immigrants and early DACA recipients who have built their careers on reimagining systems and fostering change. The project represents their commitment to creating accessible spaces that encourage connection and innovation.

Through a profit-sharing model and a focus on sustainability, Starling ensures its impact extends beyond its walls, benefiting the broader community.

A space for creativity and collaboration

The building features a range of multipurpose spaces available for hourly rental, catering to entrepreneurs, students, artists and professionals.

Among its offerings:

  • Monday Coffee Co.

    – Founded by Amanda Harth and Felton Kizer in 2020, the coffee shop has made its mark through pop-ups. Starling serves as its first permanent storefront.

  • The Sun Room

    – A skylight-lit space designed for meetings, art exhibits and creative collaboration.

  • The Moon Room

    – A lending library inspired by Mexico City, featuring books on art, liberation and culture. Through a partnership with Open Books, visitors can take books home for free.

  • The Meeting Room

    – A private space for small groups.

  • The Sound Studio

    – A plug-and-play recording space for music and podcast production.

  • Terrace Island

    – An outdoor terrace wrapping around the building, featuring retractable glass doors to blend indoor and outdoor spaces.

  • The Garden

    – A landscaped entryway with native perennials, creating a natural transition from the street into the space.

Looking ahead

Starling is more than just a development—it’s part of a movement to reinvest in North Lawndale and create sustainable, community-driven spaces.

“North Lawndale has so much potential,” Robles said. “With Starling, we’re proving that thoughtful, resident-focused investment can make a real difference.”

The space is now open to the public, offering a new home for collaboration, creativity and growth in the heart of the neighborhood.
