Pegasus Theatre Chicago Presents “Shakin’ the Mess Outta Misery” – A Powerful Revival Honoring Shay Youngblood

For over 40 years, Pegasus Theatre Chicago has championed diverse voices and fresh perspectives. Through socially conscious theatre and robust arts education, Pegasus is committed to inspiring dialogue and shaping the next generation of creators.

Pegasus Theatre Chicago proudly announces the revival of Shakin’ the Mess Outta Misery by the late Shay Youngblood, running from May 15 through June 15, 2025, at Chicago Dramatists’ Russ Tutterow Theatre (798 N. Aberdeen). This heartwarming and deeply personal production explores themes of Black womanhood, community, healing, and memory through the eyes of a young woman raised by a circle of wise, nurturing women in 1960s Georgia.

Shakin’ the Mess Outta Misery follows “Daughter” as she returns home to honor the last of the women who raised her. Through a series of emotional flashbacks, the play revisits her coming-of-age journey, guided by her “Big Mamas”—a group of women who were part blood family, part chosen family. Their stories, rituals, and spiritual teachings form a touching celebration of resilience, faith, and identity.

The creative team includes Harrison Ornelas (scenic design), Josh Wroblewski (lighting), Shawn Wallace (music direction), Steve Labedz (sound), Tanji Harper (choreography), Marquecia Jordan (costumes), Sheryl Williams (TIE Consultant), Carrie Hardin (dialects), and Wendy Huber (props design).

This production is dedicated to playwright Shay Youngblood, who passed away in June 2024. Her powerful storytelling lives on through this revival, which will be accompanied by a series of community engagement events focused on healing and self-care.

With support from Healing Illinois, these events include:

  • Healing Circles
  • Post-show discussions

  • Special performances from May 19 to June 15, 2025
