Rebuilding Pullman One Porch At A Time

By
1/17/2024

The Historic Pullman Community has garnered significant attention, with the Pullman National Historical Park presenting a long-term reinvestment opportunity for Chicago’s Far-Southside, the 9th Ward, and the Greater Roseland Community. Pullman National Historical Park houses several significant historic structures in need of repair due to deferred maintenance. With approximately 57% of trades workers in the Greater Chicagoland area nearing retirement, there is a limited number of contractors offering historically technical services in the Far-South, South, and West Sides of Chicago.

Embracing historic preservation activism and immersive experiences, PTW actively invests in the community through equitable education, individual inspiration, and cultural collaboration. The organization recognizes the value that pre-apprenticeship programs, artisan workshops, and transitional employment opportunities bring to Historic Trades Workers.

PTW is dedicated to training Chicago residents in historic trades, not only contributing to neighborhood revitalization but also ensuring that resources remain within the community. Thanks to SC Johnson, PTW recently completed its third cohort summer youth Porch In A Box build program and is well-prepared to commence the fourth cohort in September 2023.

Established as a 501(c)(3) in April 2022, Pullman Tech Workshop is headquartered in the former Schlitz Brewery Stable, a City of Chicago Landmark on Schlitz Row, located two blocks west and two blocks south of the Pullman National Historical Park in Chicago’s Greater Roseland Community.
