Bennison’s Bakery Keeps Fat Tuesday Sweet with Paczki and King Cakes
Bennison’s Bakery, a cherished Evanston establishment since 1938, continues to delight patrons with its seasonal specialties, notably paczki and king cakes, during the pre-Lenten season.
Paczki, traditional Polish pastries enjoyed on Fat Tuesday, are a highlight at Bennison’s. The bakery offers an array of flavors, including raspberry, apple, apricot, cheese, prune, chocolate custard, lemon, blueberry, strawberry and cream, banana cream, German chocolate, and praline mousse. These round, sugar-coated treats are available from February 1st until March 8th, with options for pre-ordering online or by phone.
In addition to paczki, Bennison’s celebrates Mardi Gras with its New Orleans-style king cakes. These brightly decorated cakes come in various fillings, such as plain, cream cheese, apple, cherry, and praline pecan. Each cake is hand-formed into braids and rings, baked, and then adorned with sweet glaze and colorful sugar. A small baby figurine is traditionally hidden inside, symbolizing good luck for the finder.
Beyond its pastries, Bennison’s engages the community with events like the annual Paczki Eating Contest. In its 14th year, the recent contest saw participants braving freezing temperatures to compete outside the bakery on Davis Street. Team 4, comprising Adam Wendt and Patrick Delaney, emerged victorious by consuming 45 paczki in five minutes.
Located at 1000 Davis St., Bennison’s Bakery continues to be a cornerstone of Evanston’s culinary scene, offering traditional baked goods that honor both cultural traditions and community spirit.
