Open House Chicago is back this weekend

By
10/14/2022

Open House Chicago is back (In Person) for another weekend of architectural discoveries and delights. This free public festival from the Chicago Architecture Center provides behind-the-scenes access to architecturally, historically and culturally significant sites across the city on October 15-16. Continue exploring all month long with self-guided tours and a suite of virtual programs.

This year, the new Chicago Architecture Center app is your key to getting the most out of Open House Chicago. Discover sites in your vicinity with the map feature, learn about neighborhoods and sites with a full list of descriptions, dive into special content exclusive to the app, and stay up to date with news and announcements during OHC weekend. Plus, self-guided thematic tours of building exteriors and significant sites that you can explore via bike, car or on foot.

Formerly known as Northwest Bowl, Avondale Bowl is an eight-lane, second-story bowling alley and bar that originally opened in the 1940s. The operation closed in the early 1990s and was used for a time as storage for a ground-floor grocery store. The now-restored alley features original wood lanes, gutters and Brunswick A2 pinsetters, all completely rebuilt in place. New skylights and large windows allow for natural light, a feature seldomly found in bowling alleys. A rebuilt bar incorporates the original mahogany rail.

The entire bowling alley and bar will be open to visitors. The bar will be serving both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, with a water station available as well. Bowling will be available at a rate of $40/hour for up to 6 people per lane. Our bowling alley is on the second store up one flight of stairs. An elevator is also available.
