Mordecai: Where Chicago Cubs Lore Meets a Modern American Bistro

In a city where every corner seems to hold a story, Mordecai stands out—not just for what’s on the plate, but for what lingers in its bones. This lively American bistro blends polished comfort with neighborhood ease, offering a space where regulars settle in and first-timers quickly feel like they’ve been coming for years.

But behind the confident wine list and elevated takes on classic fare lies a tale pulled straight from the bloodline of Chicago Cubs history.

On October 8, 1908, pitcher Mordecai Brown walked onto the field with more than just the weight of a pennant race on his shoulders. Tucked inside his coat pocket were six handwritten death threats—each stamped with the ominous black handprint of the Black Hand. The message was simple: lose to the New York Giants, or else.

Brown, known as “Three Finger” after a childhood farm accident left his hand permanently altered, did what he always did—he pitched. And he won.

That same grit defines Mordecai the restaurant. It’s a place that doesn’t try too hard to impress—but does anyway.

In the kitchen, Chef Matthias Merges leans into seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, reshaping traditional American dishes with a light touch and a sense of play. The menu walks a careful line: familiar enough to crave, inventive enough to surprise.

Behind the bar, the pedigree shows. The cocktail program—crafted by the team behind Billy Sunday in Logan Square—pairs vintage and collectible spirits with inventive technique, resulting in drinks that feel both timeless and forward-thinking.

There’s an unmistakable energy here—spirited but unpretentious. It’s the kind of place you come back to not just for the food or the drinks, but for the feeling that Chicago itself is sitting down at the table with you.

Because at Mordecai, history isn’t just remembered—it’s poured, plated, and served nightly.
