Beyond Cheesesteaks: Why Middle Child is Philly’s Breakfast Champion
“You have to check out Middle Child for me. I’ve heard it’s amazing,” a friend insisted.
Challenge accepted, I thought.
Conveniently located about a mile from both Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, Middle Child is the ideal spot to grab a bite before diving into the city’s historical sights.
Drawing inspiration from classic Philly delis and diners, Middle Child’s menu serves up nostalgic comfort food with a twist. Whether you’re craving eggs or bagels in the morning or hearty hoagies and sandwiches for lunch, this place has you covered. In the cozy space, with counter seating and a handful of tables, you can watch the staff in action in the open kitchen—cracking eggs by the dozen, making fresh condiments, and whipping up house-made jams.
On my visit, I opted for the Classic Breakfast Sandwich. I had tempered my expectations, assuming it would be just another standard breakfast option. But I was pleasantly mistaken. The sandwich was a revelation: fluffy, pillowy eggs paired with sharp American cheese, crisp arugula, and griddled, buttered potato bread. It was a perfect blend of airy yet satisfying flavors. While there are a few optional add-ons like avocado, trust me, you won’t need them.
I only wish I had room to try more. Last year, Middle Child’s popular pastrami, egg, and cheese on rye was crowned the best breakfast sandwich in the nation by Good Morning America’s “United States of Breakfast” competition, beating out contenders from other major cities.
While Philly might be famous for its cheesesteaks, it was breakfast that truly stole the show for me.
