A Conversation With Blues Legend Michael Charles

By
7/10/2023

We had the pleasure of catching up with a blues legend! Michael Charles has been part of the Blues fabric of Chicago for more than 30 years.

When Australian-born Michael Charles traveled the 12,500 miles to test the waters for his music in Chicago he would have never guessed some thirty years later he would be literally testing the waters!

Hailing from the “Island Continent” you would think this Aussie would be a natural in the water. But on the contrary, as Michael Charles states, “I really prefers to keep my feet on dry land”… that is, until it comes to performing. Then this muso is so driven, he will go anywhere, and he will be proving just that this summer when he sets sail and entertains on the Tall Ship Windy, the official flagship of the city of Chicago!

His actual journey in the USA started over three decades ago when MC traveled from Australia in the early 90’s. From the invitation to perform at the original Buddy Guy’s Legends, to actually standing, with shaky knees, alongside one of his heroes, Mr. Guy, this introduction to America proved to be a great start for his career in the USA and is still a highlight to this very day.

Touring with some blues greats, more releases, building recording studios, television appearances, Grammy elections, an induction into the Chicago Blues Hall of Fame are some of what has filled the last thirty some years. At this time MC is four months into his sixteenth consecutive international tour across the USA, Canada and Australia and Lake Michigan will be a part of the “NO DETOURS” 2023 tour this year as Michael Charles and his band make “their maiden voyage” and board Tall Ship Windy.

Set sail with Michael on Mondays July 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 August 7 & 14 7pm-9pm.
