From A Neighborhood Grocery Store To Lottie's Pub: Proudly Toasting To 90 Years

Lottie’s Pub is proudly toasting to 90 years of serving the community this year! Their official anniversary extravaganza is scheduled for Saturday, May 18th, but the festivity kicks off early with a four-day celebration starting on Thursday, May 16th, and continuing through Sunday, May 19th.

In 1934, Lottie Zagorski transformed a neighborhood grocery store and bar in the Shakespeare District into a beloved full-service tavern, rumored to also harbor a clandestine speakeasy. Fast forward to 1967, when Zagorski found herself embroiled in controversy as part of a citywide crackdown on crime. Known for running a gambling ring alongside mob-linked figure Andy “The Greek” Lochious, Zagorski’s tavern was raided by federal authorities, resulting in a high-profile arrest and the discovery of illicit gambling paraphernalia.

Despite the legal turmoil, Zagorski remained a legendary figure, with numerous politicians and businessmen rallying to her defense, attesting to her untouchable status in Chicago’s underworld. Her legacy endured even after her passing in 1973, and in 1986, the bar was renamed “Lottie’s Pub” in her honor.

Throughout the decades, Lottie’s Pub remained a hub of intrigue and camaraderie, drawing both public officials and gangsters seeking respite from the city’s tumultuous landscape. The establishment’s basement Rathskellar, once a haven for illicit activities, became a symbol of Chicago’s enigmatic past.

In 2010, Lottie’s Pub received national acclaim when it was recognized by Coors Brewing Co. as one of the two best bars in the nation, a testament to its enduring spirit and authenticity.

Under current owner Mark Domitrovich, Lottie’s Pub continues to thrive, with ongoing renovations unearthing relics of its storied past, including a mysterious collection of bones in 2004 that captivated both locals and media alike.

As part of their 90th-anniversary celebration, Lottie’s Pub invites patrons to join in the festivities:

  • Thursday, 5/16: Kick-off the celebration with a 90’s themed party featuring throwback music, giveaways, and special drink offers.
  • Friday, 5/17: Enjoy a pre-party happy hour with promotions, samplings, and giveaways throughout the day.
  • Saturday, 5/18: Dive into nostalgia with $0.90 burgers, $0.90 drafts, and other delectable specials all day long.
