Joffrey Ballet's The Nutcracker Brings Chicago's History to Life
The Joffrey Ballet’s The Nutcracker has become a quintessential part of Chicago’s holiday season, weaving the city’s rich history into a timeless tale of wonder and joy. Returning to the Lyric Opera House, 20 N. Upper Wacker Drive, the critically acclaimed production will run for 25 performances from Dec. 6 to Dec. 28, 2024.
Set against the backdrop of the 1893 World’s Fair, the reimagined ballet, choreographed by two-time Tony Award®-winner Christopher Wheeldon, tells the story of young Marie and her immigrant family. The tale begins on Christmas Eve, as Marie’s mother, a sculptress working on the Fair’s iconic Statue of the Republic, hosts a festive gathering. A surprise visit from the enigmatic Great Impresario launches Marie and the Nutcracker Prince into a dreamlike adventure through the fairgrounds.
“This production is often the first introduction to the Joffrey for many,” said Greg Cameron, president and CEO of the Joffrey Ballet. “We’re thrilled to bring back this beloved holiday tradition, which highlights both the magic of the season and Chicago’s cultural heritage.” Cameron added that the company’s new Discount Family Series aims to make the ballet more accessible, calling it “the gift that keeps giving.”
Ashley Wheater MBE, The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director, emphasized the production’s enduring appeal. “For some, The Nutcracker is a nostalgic journey; for others, a new, enchanting adventure,” Wheater said. “It serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of family, wonder, and belonging. Against the historic backdrop of Chicago, it becomes a story that blends our shared history with dreams of the future.”
The production boasts a creative team of award-winning collaborators, including Tony-nominated set and costume designer Julian Crouch, Caldecott Medal-winning author Brian Selznick, and celebrated puppeteer Basil Twist. Lighting designer Natasha Katz and projection designer Ben Pearcy of 59 Productions contribute stunning visuals to the performance.
Wheeldon’s The Nutcracker, adapted in 2021 for the grand scale of the Lyric Opera House, features live accompaniment by the Lyric Opera Orchestra under Music Director Scott Speck.
The ballet’s two-act structure, set to Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, delivers a uniquely Chicagoan twist to the classic story while preserving its universal themes of hope and joy.
Tickets for The Nutcracker are on sale now, offering Chicagoans an opportunity to make this cherished tradition part of their holiday celebrations.
