Hymn at Chicago Shakespeare: A Soulful Story of Brotherhood, Music, and Second Chances
Hey Chicago theater fans—this one’s for you!
Now playing at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Hymn is a powerful new production that dives deep into brotherhood, faith, and what it means to truly connect with someone—especially when life throws you curveballs.
Directed by the legendary Ron OJ Parson and written by Lolita Chakrabarti (Life of Pi, Red Velvet), Hymn tells the story of two very different men—Benny and Gil—who meet as strangers but quickly form a bond that feels like family. Set on Chicago’s South Side and pulsing with the energy of R&B, gospel, and house music, this story hits all the right notes.
And let’s talk about the cast:
🎭 Chiké Johnson (Broadway’s Wit, Toni Stone)
🎭 James Vincent Meredith (Steppenwolf, The Book of Mormon, Fargo)
These two bring raw emotion, humor, and heart to the stage in a way that will stick with you long after the curtain call.
💬 Director Ron OJ Parson says it best:
“What better play than one about brothers, love, faith, and hope—what the world needs a lot more of.”
Hymn runs now through May 25 at Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s Courtyard Theater. The press opening is Saturday, May 3 at 7 p.m., and trust us—you’re going to want to be there early.
