From the humble softball fields of Palos Hills, Illinois, to the illustrious stage of the Hellas National Softball Team, Laurie Markatos has consistently exceeded expectations. She’s never been one to take the easy route, relying instead on grit, determination, and an undeniable swagger to carve out her path to success. A standout athlete during her days at Amos Alonzo Stagg High School, Laurie epitomized the values of hard work and perseverance.

Laurie and I go way back—to the days when we first crossed paths on the back fields of Stagg High School. She’d boast endlessly about the Yankees and their World Series dominance, while I, a die-hard Cubs fan, would valiantly defend my team despite their then-80-year championship drought. Our shared love for baseball, music, and the timeless charm of John Hughes movies forged a bond that has endured since the ’90s.

Today, I couldn’t be prouder of Laurie’s latest achievement: serving as the assistant coach for the National Greek Softball Team as they strive to qualify for the 2028 Olympics. I recently had the privilege of catching up with Laurie, and she shared her exciting news with me, along with ways in which all of you can contribute to the success of this budding softball team.

Comprising predominantly of Greek descent athletes residing in North America, many of whom are distinguished college competitors at prestigious universities, this formidable squad embodies a fusion of talent, passion, and allegiance to their ancestral homeland. With a fervent commitment to their roots, these remarkable athletes have painstakingly unearthed their familial lineage, obtaining Greek citizenship to proudly don the iconic blue and white colors of Greece.

Representing a diverse tapestry of Greek diaspora, spanning the United States, Canada, and Greece itself, these skilled athletes are poised to showcase their exceptional softball prowess on European stages, each game a testament to their unwavering dedication and tireless pursuit of excellence.
