The Joffrey Ballet’s latest mixed-repertory program, “Golden Hour,” is captivating audiences at the Lyric Opera House with a blend of world premieres and celebrated works. Running through March 2, the production highlights the company’s versatility and commitment to innovative storytelling.

Headlining the program is the world premiere of Princess and the Pea, choreographed by Dani Rowe with a libretto co-written by Rowe and Garen Scribner. This modern adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale presents a whimsical yet thought-provoking narrative.

Set in the monochromatic Pea Town, the story follows young Penelopea, portrayed by Annabelle de la Nuez, as she challenges the authoritarian rule of a tyrannical princess, danced by Basia Rhoden. The production features vibrant costumes and sets designed by Emma Kingsbury, with an original score composed by James Stephenson. The Chicago Tribune describes the ballet as “a fantastical world that’s primarily pure fun,” while also acknowledging its underlying social commentary.

The program also includes the return of Nicolas Blanc’s Under the Trees’ Voices, a piece examining themes of community and connection. Originally created during the pandemic, the ballet is set to Ezio Bosso’s Symphony No. 2 and has been praised for its emotional resonance and enduring relevance.

Cathy Marston’s Heimat offers a tender portrayal of familial bonds, inspired by Richard Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll. The ballet reflects Marston’s personal connection to Chicago and The Joffrey Ballet, exploring the concept of heimat, a German term for a sense of home or belonging.

Rounding out the program is Yuri Possokhov’s Andante, a world premiere set to Dmitri Shostakovich’s Second Piano Concerto. This intimate piece features a trio of dancers, including Victoria Jaiani, Alberto Velazquez, and Xavier Núñez. Possokhov, known for his expansive choreography, showcases his ability to create powerful, nuanced works that highlight the dancers’ technical prowess and emotional depth.

“Golden Hour” runs through March 2 at the Lyric Opera House, located at 20 North Upper Wacker Drive. Tickets start at $36 and are available for purchase online at the Joffrey Ballet’s official website.
