Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble Premieres Funny Like an Abortion in March
Chicago has always been a city that pushes boundaries—whether in music, theater, or comedy. We’ve been ahead of the curve for decades, setting the pace while the rest of the world catches up. That spirit of innovation thrives in the Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble (CDE), which, in collaboration with Fat Theater Project, is set to present Funny Like an Abortion from March 10–30 at 1650 W. Foster Ave.
This darkly comedic and timely play, written by Rachel Bublitz and directed by Eileen Tull, imagines a future America where even saying the word “abortion” is a crime. When Monroe finds herself unexpectedly pregnant, she throws an abortion party, inviting her best friend, Jade, to join her in navigating this fraught reality. Funny Like an Abortion is as searing as it is satirical, making its Chicago premiere all the more urgent.
A special preview performance will take place on Monday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m., with the official press opening on Tuesday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m. Regular performances run Fridays through Sundays at 7:30 p.m., with a pay-what-you-can ticket model (suggested donation: $30).
Doors open at 7 p.m. for each performance, featuring a gallery exhibition that explores the social and political landscape of the femme experience, including a timeline of women’s history milestones.
