Here's How You Request A Free Tree Planting In Chicago
Did you know that you can request to have a free tree planted at your house? No catch, (this is why you pay your taxes) Chicago residents can request a tree be planted in a public parkway, free of charge, by submitting a 311 “Tree Planting Request.”
When you provide an email or cell phone number, you’ll receive a tracking number that allows you to check the status of your service request and receive updates if available.
Required information for a tree planting work order includes the address where the tree(s) is to be planted, the number of trees, and whether a tree has been previously planted at that location.
The Department of Streets and Sanitation’s (DSS) Bureau of Forestry (BOF) oversees tree planting for the City of Chicago. After submitting your request, BOF will inspect the site and confirm its suitability for a tree to grow. The BOF requires a 5-foot distance between a tree and any underground utility, including gas, water, or electric, to prevent tree loss in case of utility access, and approximately 25 feet between trees. If the site is approved they will leave a door hanger, and/or provide an update via text or email. Homeowners have 60 days to cancel a tree or submit a preference for a particular species.
It’s that easy, click here to order your new tree!
