11/4/2022

Chicago has another gem of an after-work hangout spot.

Clever Coyote opened its doors in October within The Robey Hotel (2018 W North Ave), nearly 6 years after the hotel’s 2016 launch.

Nestled in the lively Wicker Park-Bucktown neighborhood, the new cocktail bar is a chic, retro sanctuary amidst the city’s bustling ‘Six Corners’ Milwaukee/Damen/North intersection.

Hours are 3-11 pm Sunday-Thursday and 3-12 am Friday-Saturday.

Clever Coyote is an ode to the history of The Robey’s 1929 landmarked art-deco building. The cocktail bar’s name is reminiscent of the name locals once knew it as: ‘The Coyote Building’ (derived from its spire resembling the upturned nose of a howling coyote).

The new second-floor concept will serve up a high dose of nostalgic ’80s and ’90s pop culture, represented by classic rock atmosphere and games like Street Fighter and shuffleboard.

Beverage Director Mike Choi has curated cocktails that nod to the ’90s. Guests will find a wide array of drinks that draw off the kitschy, tropical theme, such as the Rye Tai, Pool Shark Attack, Money-Cat with lavender, lemon, and Aquavit, Black Hole Sun with mezcal, tequila, roasted grapefruit syrup, lime, and activated charcoal, and Suckerpunch, a clarified gin milk punch with pineapple and lime.

The menu will feature a few classic cocktails like a Sazerac and a play on a Whisky Sour called the Tokio Sour with Toki, yuzu, and egg white. The Robey’s signature cocktail, Oaxacan on Broken Glass, a blend of Banhez Mezcal, Ancho Reyes, lime, and fire bitters, will also be available.

Chef Michael Elliott will offer a selection of chicken wings and creative steamed buns inspired by popular worldly sandwiches that pair perfectly with Choi’s cocktails.
