Chiquita Scoops: The Sweet Family Dream That Turned Gladstone Park Into Chicago’s Coolest Ice Cream Destination

There’s a certain kind of magic that lives in a neighborhood ice cream shop. It hums in the background like an old summer song, the kind you didn’t know you’d remember forever.

In Chicago’s Gladstone Park, that magic has a name: Chiquita Scoops Inc.

More than just a place to grab a cone, Chiquita Scoops is a love letter written in sugar, fruit, and tradition. A family-owned Mexican-style ice cream shop, it serves up vibrant paletas, creamy scoops, and specialty treats that feel both nostalgic and new with every bite.

The story begins simply, and beautifully. A daughter who loved ice cream. A family that believed in her joy. And a dream that refused to stay small.

Co-owner Joel Gonzalez has called Gladstone Park home since he was five years old. Now, he’s helping shape the neighborhood in a whole new way, turning a familiar corner into a gathering place where cultures meet and memories are made.

Alongside him is Mireya Gonzalez, co-owner, visionary, and living proof of perseverance. Once a dreamer under the DACA program, Mireya carries a message that echoes through every scoop served: “Sí se puede.” Yes, it can be done.

And they’ve done it.

Chiquita Scoops isn’t just about ice cream. It’s about representation. It’s about family. It’s about honoring Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage while building something that belongs to everyone who walks through the door.

Step inside and you’ll find more than dessert. You’ll find kids pressing their noses against the glass, parents reliving their own childhood summers, and a community stitched together by something as simple, and powerful, as sweetness.

Because sometimes, the biggest dreams don’t roar.

They arrive quietly… on a stick, in a cone, or in a cup.

And they taste like home.
