When you’re not expecting driving into a tunnel, under water…it’s terrifying. Hence, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge–Tunnel, spanning 17.6 miles, is a remarkable engineering feat connecting Delmarva to Hampton Roads in Virginia, USA. Inaugurated on April 15, 1964, this structure replaced ferries in operation since the 1930s. Commencing construction on October 26, 1960, the bridge–tunnel stands at a height of 40 feet above the bay, boasting a total length of 92,848 feet. Its sheer size and the experience of driving across can be intimidating for those unfamiliar with its grandeur.
It’s terrifying and fantastic…and so macho American that I love it.
