Archie's Tavern Celebrates 80 Years

By
7/5/2023

Raise a glass to 80 years of (Iowa Rockwell Tavern) Archies. All is right in the world at Iowa and Rockwell with the Hamm’s beer sign in its traditional spot, affixed to the front of the building. Archie’s Tavern has been around for 80 years, all with one family. Polish immigrants to Chicago, the Boraca family opened the doors right after World War II.

Known for its cozy neighborhood vibe, it has become a favorite of many around Chicago. They have a proud tradition of being uniquely Chicago with their Hamm’s and Malort sales. According to Katrina Arthur, the bar sold around 50,00 cans of Hamm’s in 2018 and 2019. In 2022 the number shrunk a bit, but that might be due to the 13,000 shots of Malört. (Yes, that’s 13,000 shots…of Malört.)

The neighborhood feels still oozes from the bar itself, with much of the bar still looking the exact same as it has for years. “We’ve made a few updates over the years with air conditioning and a couple of big screens to watch Chicago teams and the news,” said Arthur.

Pull up a stool, grab yourself a bowl of cheeseballs, and get yourself a shot and beer.

Cheers to 80 years, the bar is open!
