Sammy Sosa made a notable appearance in town last week, attending a fan convention in Rosemont and an event at the Schriners Club in Chicago. During his visit, he took a moment to catch up with his old friend Steve Cochran at WLS 890. When asked about the possibility of reconciling with the Chicago Cubs, Sosa responded optimistically, stating, “we’re close.”
Reflecting on his journey, Sosa acknowledged the challenges of fame, likening it to soaring among the clouds, making it difficult to return to reality. However, he emphasized that he has since grounded himself and learned from past mistakes, expressing a genuine desire to mend his relationship with the Cubs. Sosa admitted to missing Chicago, emphasizing, “I need to do something in this city, my city.”
Sosa’s significance in baseball history cannot be overstated, particularly his pivotal role alongside Mark McGwire in revitalizing the sport during the electrifying 1998 season. However, tensions arose following his departure from the Cubs, culminating in a strained relationship with the team and teammates, highlighted by his abrupt exit during his final season with the Cubs.
