SKOKIE:

John Amico School of Hair Design is dedicated to preparing its students not just to pass their state licensure exams, but to truly excel in their future roles as salon professionals. Our mission revolves around “transforming lives through quality education,” arming students with the essential tools for success in their local communities.

Born into a family where creativity flowed through his veins, John Amico Sr. initially pursued an architecture degree at Notre Dame before finding his true passion in beauty school. Despite facing setbacks, including being fired from his first two salon positions, Amico’s unwavering determination propelled him forward. Starting as a shampoo boy, he quickly honed his skills, eventually opening his first salon after a client offered him a lease on an empty barbershop.

Amico’s journey involved extensive training and competition as a platform hair artist, specializing in competitive hair design and creative hair color with European influences. Reflecting on his initial success, he humorously attributes it to “not knowing any better.” A natural entrepreneur from a young age, Amico emphasizes the importance of having a vision and not letting dream-killers deter you.

His entrepreneurial spirit led to the establishment of his own cosmetology schools and the launch of the “Hair Performers” salon chain in 1973. This successful venture grew to 225 locations, with Amico encouraging students to become future salon owners. In 1986, recognizing a niche in the market, he co-founded We Care Hair Salons with Subway sandwich restaurant owner Fred DeLuca, quickly expanding to 175 locations.

Amico’s leadership extended beyond business success, earning him the prestigious ‘Spirit of Life Award’ in 1986. As a motivational speaker at prominent events, including Intercoiffure and Premiere, he shares his insights on success and entrepreneurship. Despite his remarkable achievements, family remains a cornerstone of his life, with daily conversations with his children.

Transitioning focus in the 1990s, Amico dedicated his efforts to the family-owned John Amico Products Company, the oldest professional hair care company in the United States. Today, the company’s products are widely used in thousands of top salons across America.

Reflecting on his journey, Amico acknowledges that his challenge hasn’t been financial but in identifying individuals with the passion to excel and creating effective systems for mutual success. His ultimate satisfaction lies in witnessing the success of his students and salon owners, with many attributing their achievements to his positive and nurturing influence. For Amico, the key to success is not just talking the talk but walking the talk, loving what you do, and allowing that passion to build your success with the support of others.
