But, who is Chief O’Neill?

Captain O’Neill, the formidable General Superintendent of Police in Chicago during the turn of the 20th century, exuded a preference for the title “Captain” over “Chief” or “Superintendent,” hinting at the man’s character. His life unfolded as an epic narrative, rich with adventure and daring exploits. Hailing from County Cork, he mastered the flute amidst the lush landscapes of his homeland. At a mere sixteen years old, armed with a letter of introduction to the local bishop, he embarked on a path ordained for priesthood. However, destiny had other plans as he fled to the boundless sea, traversing the globe and surviving the perils of a Pacific shipwreck before finding solace in the embrace of San Francisco’s shores.

Transitioning to the rugged plains of Montana, he embraced the life of a rancher before charting a course to Chicago via the vibrant ports of New Orleans and Missouri. It was in Missouri where he encountered his destiny in the form of Anna Rogers, a young woman whose path intersected with his during a voyage from Ireland. Their union solidified, they ventured to Chicago in 1870, mere months before the cataclysmic Great Chicago Fire of 1871 reshaped the city’s destiny.

Initially drawn to the vast expanse of the Great Lakes as a sailor aboard ore boats, fate intervened once more as Captain O’Neill found himself donning the uniform of a patrolman in the esteemed Chicago Police force. His tenure, however brief, was marked by unyielding courage and resilience. Within a month of joining the force, he stared down the barrel of a burglar’s gun, bearing the scars of a gunshot wound near his spine for the remainder of his days. Yet, undeterred by his injuries, he apprehended the assailant and marched him into custody, a testament to his unwavering dedication amidst the challenges of patrolling the city streets on foot.

At Chief O’Neill’s, they take immense pride in crafting unforgettable experiences.
